National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Efforts

https://en.wikipedia.org

The economic principle I’m exploring is how “institutions are the "rules of the game" that influence choices.”

My research question to help me study the economic principle is “What are institutions (e.g. government, non profit
organizations) doing to protect coral reefs? What more could they do and what are the costs?”

The article published on the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s website titled “Coral Reefs” demonstrates
this economic principle because it argues/shows the main goals that the organization has for conservation as well as
other institutions that they work with.

First, many of the problems that these living reefs face are created by humans. In fact, “recent reports indicate that 58
to 70 percent of coral reefs globally are directly threatened by human-associated activities.” These activities include, but
are not limited to,overfishing, intensive boating and recreational impacts, and land-based sources of pollution in the
form of sediments and excess nutrients threaten coral ecosystems.” These are the main problems occurring in these
areas that some institutions are trying to prevent in the future.

Second, the “NFWF works with local, state, federal and regional partners to achieve its goals in coral conservation
and bolsters multi-agency initiatives like the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force Watershed Partnership Initiative. The program
works to support reef resiliency by reducing negative impacts from unsustainable fishing and land-based pollution.”
This article enlightens us on the issue by naming a few of the institutions that have been working to support the reefs
and help preserve them.

Third, there are many key strategies being used to help in the conservation efforts. These include:
“-Reducing primary threats such as land-based sources of pollution from agricultural runoff, sewage outfall, and
erosion from bare soils, and reducing functional reef species through unsustainable harvest
-Increasing the use of measurable goals, objectives and coral health thresholds in management planning
-Increasing the management effectiveness of Marine Protected Area networks through management training and community engagement”

In my next blog post I will research: where a majority of environment conservation efforts are being focused.

  1. I find in interesting that companies are doing less than they used to but the environment and coral reefs continue to decline.
A suggestion for a future research topic is how these companies destroying coral reefs and the environment adversely effects the company themselves- like, how they pull so much from the environment (like goods/services/etc.) but they continue to destroy it.
