The economic principle I’m exploring is because of scarcity, people choose. My research question to help me study the economic principle is how do NFL teams determine a players value?

The article published on Bleacher Report titled “How NFL Teams Determine a Player's Value” demonstrates this economic principle because it shows how NFL teams must choose what players to pursue and let go by scouting potential players and evaluating their current roster.

First, NFL teams will assign their scouts what teams they will be scouting and responsible for making scouting reports. The scouts will watch at least three games of each team they are scouting. After that, they will proceed to produce scouting reports for every player on that team and even their practice roster.

Second, NFL teams must assess the current situation team on their roster to narrow down who they will target in free agency. They will use the scouting reports generated by their scouts to rank the different players among the NFL into groupings. The groupings include high-level players, young players, veterans, upcoming UFAs, etc.

Third, Based on the team's needs and the potential players they can sign; the NFL teams will produce a high and low average salary for each potential target. After certain targets are signed or made unavailable the valuations of each player can change according to each team.

In my next blog post, I will research: Why do teams need new acquisitions?

  1. I think this is a really cool topic. I feel like deciding how much someone deserves for playing is difficult.

  2. This is very similar to the research that I'm doing, although I am focusing on the NBA rather than the NFL. I think the subject is interesting, but I really found it surprising that teams produce a high and low average salary for each potential target. For future research, I would look into what specific factors teams look for within a player that most contribute to their "worth" or value.
