The Pros and Cons of Becoming a Doctor

The economic principle I’m exploring is people gain when they trade voluntarily.

My research question to help me study the economic principle is: How can students who are planning to go to medical school ensure they will be benefiting/gaining (+ getting a job)? (Consider long schooling, expenses, and the overall benefits and drawbacks)

The article published in Thought.co titled “The Benefits and Disadvantages of Being a Doctor” demonstrates this economic principle because it shows the pros (rewarding, mentally stimulating, lucrative) and cons (time consuming and stressful) regarding pursuing the medical field.

First, there are rewarding benefits to choosing this career path. People who are involved in this field have the opportunity to support others and save lives. Along with this, being a doctor is a job that is good for those who value mental stimulation, as medicine is constantly changing and evolving. After you become a doctor, you have the benefit of being able to teach students about medicine. One last benefit has to do with the salary, as “many doctors make upwards of $100,000 a year.”

Second, there are also several drawbacks to entering the medical field. Becoming a doctor requires a lot of time and effort. It takes “over eight years of schooling to get full certification”. Many students get out of medical school with a huge amount of debt and “it may take years to pay off the debt and begin to see a profitable life as a doctor.” Additionally, this career path deals with long hours, a stressful work environment, and overwhelming responsibility. For those who struggle in stressful situations, this may not be the right path.

Third, becoming a doctor ultimately comes down to whether you have the dedication and interest in what you are pursuing. It is important to remember that it is not a job for everyone. But for those who are extremely interested and passionate about medicine, this career can be extremely rewarding.

In my next blog post I will research: the job certainty for those who graduate medical school.

  1. I like how you compared and contrasted the benefits and drawbacks of becoming a doctor. Its interesting how dedication is the driving force behind this specific career and it is interesting how long it takes to actually get a job and become certified

  2. Something I found interesting was: I never realize how much debt a doctor would have if they try and go into the medical field. The benefit for it though, is that they could pay off their debt quickly after getting their career started.

A suggestion for future research: Maybe look up an article having to do with how many people change career paths after already starting their medical path.

  3. I found it interesting that many students outweigh the debt that they have to pay off with the amount of money they'll be paid several years into the future.
A question to consider why many people chose to take on jobs like fighting in the army, despite the drawbacks (PTSD, etc.).
