The economic principle I’m exploring is that institutions are the “rules of the game” that influences choices.
My research question to help me study the economic principle is how does the regulation of firearms in the Federal and State governments affect firearm trade?
The article published in FacTank titled “Bipartisan support for some gun proposals, stark partisan divisions on many others ” demonstrates this economic principle because it argues how the rules set by different parties and organizations create different types of markets.
First, it is known that the Republican party is one the main groups that advocate for the Second Amendment and firearms in general. The Republican party also tends to overwhelmingly support policy that is pro Second Amendment. If the Republican party fully had its way the firearm market would look different then it does today. This is because the firearm market would be even more open. It would be more open because more people would buy more guns with less regulation and there would be more firearm goods for sale because of Republican policy.
Second, it is known that the Democratic party is one of the main groups that condemns firearms and the Second Amendment. The Democratic party tends to support policy that shrinks gun rights and tries to take away gun rights completely. If the Democratic party had its way the firearm market would shrink overwhelmingly. This is because Democratic policy seeks to put heavy restriction on firearms, if not ban them completely. The result would be a small if not closed market and could destroy an entire industry.
Third, outside influence can help to change gun laws which affect a free market. Outside influence can come from immediate call to action after a mass shooting or from gradual change in laws through party support. For example after the Florida shooting there was call from many people for more regulation, which in turn would work to close the firearm market. Then there are big organizations like the NRA who use its power to help secure the Second Amendment in Congress through time. Which helps to maintain and create a more open firearm market.
In my next blog post I will research: The conclusion to how the “rules of the game” influence choices.

Good research, this is a very controversial topic. Also good use of the Florida example, it is true that these national protests/walkouts could eventually eventually cause big changes as authorities continue to see the massive numbers of people that are rallying against this.
